Ever since I ran my first long distance relay at the Red Rock 2 years ago, I have loved being around races. There is something in their atmosphere that makes you feel like some invincible athlete. Even when I just volunteer or watch someone else compete, I still get get that feeling.
In reality, I max out pretty quickly when it comes to athletics, but Dane just finished his first triathlon, and his training has been huge motivation for both of us to get outside and get fit this summer. We've discovered some fun trails in the hills behind our house and a new love of road bikes since Dane got his Bianchi for graduation. I've always had mid-grade Wal-Mart mountain bikes, and it has become a whole new sport.
Watching Dane compete was actually a little stressful with the potential of him getting kicked in the face during the swim or crashing while on the bike. Fortunately, he was competing with his cousins, Tom and Chris, so I had Megan and Grant to keep me company. In the end, he did great and even got 3rd in his age group. I'm glad he's so intense; it gives me something to work towards.
