The world is flat but will always be kind of lumpy

Tonight was Costco night. We finally made it over to the local Costco to get some groceries, and it was amazing how much the same everything was. They had the bagels and the muffins, the huge double jars of peanut butter and tubs of cream cheese. They even had ladies giving out samples (although they offered things like snickers and canned peaches, not typically what needs to be pushed to consumers back home). Their prices reflected the overdue need to pass KORUS, Korea's free trade agreement with the US, but we came home with a beautiful block of cheese, and some chips and salsa thanks to our American friend and conglomerate.

There were still some changes. Instead of boxes of granola bars, they had an aisle of dried seaweed. Instead of huge bags of flour, they had rice. None of that was too unexpected, but while we were eating our Costco pizza before checking out, we noticed that everyone had plates of what looked like yellow rice. We looked closer and realized that it was the onions that they give you for the hot dogs. Almost everyone had a huge plate of them mixed with ketchup and mustard and was eating it like they would kimchi. Every time I think about it I laugh again. I bet the people at Costco HQ couldn't understand how their people could possibly go through that many onions. Weird, but somehow I understand exactly how that would make sense to Koreans. Ha, I'm still laughing.
