Airport surprises are never good surprises.

Everyone has been telling what an adventure we'll have moving to New York, but who knew you would all be right so soon. Dane and I left Friday night for Kansas City so that we could spend some time with my family and see Jason home from his mission in Vancouver--he hasn't changed a bit! We had a tight connection in Denver, so when our flight took off a little late and we had to gate check our bags I was a little nervous but figured we'd be okay. But then we sat on the tarmac for 20 minutes in Denver and missed our flight to Kansas City by 10. There is nothing worse than finding out you've missed the last flight of the day.

But we were still optimistic and thought we'd still make it by Saturday morning and they might even put us up in a hotel. The customer service lady had other ideas. Not only would there be no hotel--apparently the delay was caused by weather, which is total baloney--but there were no open seats until Sunday morning on ANY airlines. Sunday morning? We'd miss Jason's home coming talk and Dane might as well have not come since he'd leave for New York on Monday, and we started wishing we had never even left Salt Lake.

But then we were struck by inspiration. We'd been chatting up 2 guys that were also waiting in line to get re-booked to Kansas City and decided that we could drive there way before the airlines were going to get us there. So, at 1am on Saturday morning, Dane, myself, Jorge (a firefighter from Kansas City who was trying to get home to his girlfriend with a bouquet of flowers) and Ethan (a Polynesian freshman at BYU who had trouble filtering his Mormonism) set off in our little rental car. About 3 am I woke up still completely amazed that we were actually doing this, at 5am I watched the sun rise over the flat Kansas plains, and at 10am we rolled into the airport to return the car and pick up Dane's suitcase.

To be honest, I would not normally condone this behavior. In fact, I'm still not sure that the whole thing happened, but I'm glad we made it, and now I just hope that United doesn't skimp on the refund of our ticket.

--Dane moved into the apartment today and it sounds like a nice place, small but clean and new. I hope to get some pictures up soon, so stay tuned.

  2. I thought this might happen to me when I flew out of SLC to visit your mom in May. I had to race walk to make my next flight at a gate on the opposite side of the airport. Great creative thinking and now you will always have a story. Love you and be sure to blog lots about your new adventure!
