Friday I spent the day with my new friend Alee Kennedy whose husband is also a first year at Columbia. She knew some things she wanted to see in the Upper East Side, and we started at the Alliance Francaise. It's a sort of french language/culture center, and the biggest one in North America is here in New York City. I don't think I'm interested in their classes, but they have some french films and events that might be fun.
Down the street is the Plaza hotel where Kevin spends Christmas in Home Alone 2. I knew that cheap hotels in the city run about $175 a night, so I wanted to check out their rates. A 'Savers' room on a Tuesday was $800 a night. Crazy!
We found Serendipity's, and I was all excited to enjoy a nice frozen hot chocolate, but the wait was pretty long, so that will have to happen another day. My brother Jason and I used to make our own version of these on snow days, so I'm anxious to see how they stack up.
To make things interesting we decided to take a bus home. So far I've been too lazy to figure out the routes, but it's a better view than graffiti tunnels, so I should probably branch out more. After our bus didn't come, and didn't come, it finally came, then passed our specific stop. Apparently we weren't doing anything wrong because we weren't only ones frustrated by this. In the end we walked two blocks over to another similar bus route, but it was a reminder to never put too much faith in bus systems.
There is so much more on the Upper East Side (ie. Bloomingdale's and lots of fun shopping), but I have realized that since I live here, I have the luxury of pacing myself.
Miss B - I am so jealous!!!!! I have only been to NYC one time and it was enough to catch NY fever! Thank you for posting all this fun stuff for those of us who only get to live vicariously through you! I think your apartment is darling and larger than I expected a little apartment in NYC to be! Can't wait to see/hear more! Good luck and STAY SAFE!!! (And happy wishes to our little Daner! He's come a long way for the days when he used to stick potato chips in my little baby Rachel's mouth at age 3 days.... ;) Love you both! Aunt Jana
ReplyDeleteOkay, I am even more determined to sleep on your couch when we come in November. Daddy Warbucks may have different plans, but $800 a night? I think not!!
ReplyDeleteOkay, it took me 6 tries, yes, SIX to prove I was not a robot on the last word verification. Those are ridiculous. Pffffff.
