After a very long week of school and work,I was determined to make Friday something special for Dane's 23rd. I had planned all week to sneak home from work to make him a birthday cake and to slip birthday notes into his backpack and around the house to surprise him when he came home that night.
12 o'clock: I am on my way home, I get a call from the birthday boy, saying that he feels sick and wants to come home. I am a little let down that I can't be a sneak if he is home with me, but he thinks that he can sleep it off, so I figure I can still redeem the evening. I bake the cake, clean the house, and go to work til 5 to give him time to rest. When I get home, he's feeling 'better'. Not great but well enough that he wants to go out and celebrate.
Six o'clock: it all comes crashing down. Dane is driving, and suddenly the dull pain that he thought was easing up becomes worse than anything he's ever felt. Right then, thoughts of Claire's (Dane's sister) kidney stone incident this summer makes it very obvious what is going on. An hour and a half wait at the hospital confirms our guess. Dane has a 3mm kidney stone.
10 o'clock: Dane is finally on our couch all drugged up and ready to sleep. We've done absolutely nothing to celebrate his birthday, except when I sarcastically sang a Happy Birthday diddy while he was laying on the hospital bed, but it doesn't seem to matter. We're both just happy to get comfortable and fall asleep to the lines of SNL.
5 o'clock am (Sunday): This story has a happy ending. Dane passed the kidney stone early this morning. So in total, he only had to deal with the little guy for less than 48 hours-very fortunate relative to some of the stories I've heard. Still, I'm glad this episode is done so that we can finally do some celebrating.
POOR DANE!! I am glad that he was able to pass it! Happy birthday to him! PS I am SO glad you have decided to join the blogging world! I can't wait to hear more adventures from you!
ReplyDeleteI think you cursed Dane when you closed your last post saying there were no hospital visits. I'm so glad he is feeling better! Happy birthday, Dane!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad it's all over, I often declare that my birthday is a week long instead of just a day so you guys should totally do that! Thanks for sharing your blog with us :)
ReplyDeleteI want to know if he ate another cupcake after the uh...other cupcake incident?
