The Beansprout

So the story of our apartment goes like this. We went to the temple our second day here. Dane ran into an old missionary friend who knew of a ward member that rented some places. A couple hours later, we went and saw the place, and the next morning we moved in. It all happened a lot faster than we expected, but we have a place. It’s a bit older than I thought it would be in this modern city, we’re starting to get kind of attached to our little hole in Korea.

This is the main gate to the house of our landlady and the annexed huts that she rents out. Dane is throwing out some orange peels because here they separate organic trash from everything else.

This is our front door. We have a little spot for shoes, which is common of houses here, as you always take your shoes off before going inside.

Our bathroom was a bit of a shock to me. I knew things would get smaller coming out to Korea, but I guess I did not realize what was possible. Here, the shower is taken over the open floor and it all just drains down. The lack of a sink was probably the biggest surprise. We do not have a kitchen (just a fridge and a rice cooker in a corner, although we do use the kitchen in the house), so I was counting on using the sink for dishes and stuff like that, but we’re (mostly I’m) adapting to keeping the rest of the house dry while our bathroom floor is perpetually wet.

Our wonderful desk (picture is the epitome of multipurpose: desk, kitchen, linen closet, half of the bathroom, and the clothes drying area.

This is the wun-loom or one room apartment. We could have chosen two other rooms, but this one was the biggest. The bed is the hardest thing either of us has ever slept on, the internet comes in through a long cable routed out of an upstairs window on the main house, and we already have some mosquitoes. This is definitely one of those homes with character, but we’re making it comfortable, and the landlady has already proven to be one of the cutest Korean grandmas. We’re just glad we have a home.

Ours is the gray one!
